Sharing Space with a Nobel Prize Winner
Tu Youyou was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 2015 for her discoveries of a novel therapy against malaria. The Lasker Foundation awarded her the Clinical Medical Research Award in 2011, calling the discovery of artemisinin "arguably the most important pharmaceutical intervention in the last half-century." Artemisinin has saved countless lives and remains a key remedy for malaria.
In May 2016, SIOC and Landcent established a joint laboratory to prevent and control major communicable diseases in Africa. Founded in 1950, SIOC is one of the first 15 institutes of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and partnered with Tu Youyou to develop artemisinin.
The Poverty-Health Nexus
Poor health impairs an individual's capacity to work, learn, and manage daily activities, diminishing their earning potential and leading to poverty. This vicious cycle of poverty and illness entraps communities.
Landcent addresses this by prioritizing health equity and creating innovative health solutions tailored to impoverished regions.
By tackling health disparities, Landcent aims to enhance community health outcomes, break the poverty barrier and promote a cycle of sustained health and economic growth.
